Troubleshooting

advanced

This guide covers common issues with the RTC and how to resolve them. If you continue to experience problems after trying the solutions below, contact LF Audio support.

Connection Issues

Issue Solution
RTC stuck on "Scanning" Make sure the base station is powered on and within wireless range. Try moving the RTC closer to the base station. If the base station was recently replaced, perform a Factory Reset on the RTC to clear the old pairing.
Frequent disconnections Check signal strength in System Info. If the signal is weak (below -80 dBm), reposition the RTC closer to the base station or reduce obstructions between them. Metal panels and dense wiring can interfere with the wireless signal.
"Reconnecting" after base station power cycle This is normal. The RTC automatically reconnects when the base station powers back on. The channel scanner activates after about 15 seconds of silence and sweeps all channels, so recovery typically completes within 15 to 25 seconds.
RTC won't pair with a new base station Perform a Factory Reset (Menu > Advanced > Factory Reset) to clear the stored pairing, then power cycle both units.
RTC paired but System Info shows no base station data The RTC connected but the encryption keys did not negotiate (Encrypted shows "No" with both devices reachable). Perform a Factory Reset on the RTC and re-pair using Set As Only Knob so a fresh key exchange happens. If the issue persists, factory-reset the WVC base station too.
Both base station and RTC factory-reset at the same time Re-pair in this order: power on the base station first and wait for it to come up, then power on the RTC. The RTC's getting-started wizard will appear; choose Set As Only Knob since the base station has no other paired controllers. Putting the WVC in pairing mode (triple-click Reset or 3-second hold) is still required when the wizard prompts you.
Connection drops when other WiFi devices are nearby The RTC uses automatic channel scanning to avoid interference. If issues persist, try reducing the number of active WiFi networks in the area.

Display Issues

Issue Solution
Screen is too dim or too bright Adjust brightness in Settings > Brightness (10-100%).
Screen is black but the RTC appears powered Try pressing the encoder button or tapping the screen to wake the display. If the display continues to stay dark, power-cycle the base station that powers the RTC.
Touch not responding Make sure you are touching the screen with a bare finger; gloves may not register reliably. Try pressing the encoder button to verify the device is responsive.
Touch responds in some areas but not others (signal is fine) Likely a touch driver issue rather than wireless interference. Perform a Factory Reset; if the dead zone is reproducible after a reset, contact LF Audio support with a photo of the affected area.
Volume display shows "MUTE" at any volume The system volume is at 0. Rotate the encoder to increase volume.

Volume and Audio Issues

Issue Solution
Rotating the encoder doesn't change volume Make sure the RTC is connected to the base station (not on the connecting/scanning screen). If you are on a settings screen, the encoder navigates the menu instead of changing volume; press Back to return to the main screen.
Volume jumps or skips values This is normal behavior with some volume curves. Try switching to "Natural" or "Linear" in Base Settings > Volume Curve for smoother control.
IDS warning keeps appearing Check the voltage and temperature readings on the main screen. If voltage is below the Min Voltage threshold or temperature exceeds Max Temp, the IDS system will continue to trigger. Adjust thresholds in Base Settings, or investigate the underlying issue (low battery, poor ventilation, etc.).
Competition mode icon showing unexpectedly Competition mode may have been enabled. Go to Base Settings > Competition and set it to "Off".
CLIP pill appears on the Equalizer / Oscilloscope / Waterfall / Hi-Res Equalizer views The signal on that channel is clipping. Lower your head unit volume, or in Base Settings turn RCA Gain off, or reduce the per-channel Gain values, until the pill stays clear at the loudest material you play. Yellow is mild, orange is moderate, red is severe; sustained red clipping should be addressed promptly to protect speakers and avoid audible distortion. See RCA Gain for safe gain-setting procedure. (Firmware 3.10.5+)
Need to identify which channel is clipping on a 6-channel system The CLIP pill is per-channel. Switch the Channel View setting from Combined to Single in Settings, then horizontally swipe through the channels until you see which channel's CLIP pill is lit. Combined view shows the pill on the affected channel within the multi-channel display, but Single view makes it easier to spot.
Wrong volume zone is being adjusted An accidental single tap on the touchscreen no longer cycles between zones (firmware 3.10.5+). Press the encoder button to switch zones at any time. On firmware 3.10.6 and newer, you can also tap a group name to surface the navigation hints, then tap the same group name again while the hints are visible to commit the switch. The active zone's name is shown above its volume reading, and a brief "Now controlling: …" banner confirms the change.

Firmware Update Issues

Issue Solution
WiFi network not found during OTA Make sure you are within range of the WiFi network. The RTC scans 2.4 GHz networks only; 5 GHz networks will not appear. If scanning for a hidden network, use "Enter Manually" at the top of the WiFi list.
Only 5 GHz WiFi available (no 2.4 GHz network in range) The RTC's WiFi radio is 2.4 GHz only. Most modern routers broadcast both bands under the same SSID; check your router's settings to confirm 2.4 GHz isn't disabled. If your home network is 5 GHz only, the easiest workaround is to enable a 2.4 GHz hotspot on your phone for the duration of the update.
Encoder rotated while a base station OTA is in progress The encoder input is ignored during the base station's OTA: the RTC is dedicated to displaying the base station's progress arc. Volume control resumes automatically once the base station finishes and reconnects.
"No internet access" after connecting to WiFi The RTC connected to the WiFi network but cannot reach the update server. Check that the network has internet access and is not a captive portal (e.g., hotel or guest WiFi that requires a browser login). Try a different network.
Update fails with a connection error Check that the WiFi network has internet access. Try again with a different network if available.
Update fails partway through The currently installed firmware is not affected by a failed update. Wait a moment and retry. Ensure the WiFi signal is strong and the power supply is stable.
WiFi scan times out If the WiFi scan takes too long, it automatically stops after 15 seconds. Retry; transient interference can cause scan failures.
Base station update not starting The "Update Base" option only appears when connected. Make sure the RTC is connected to the base station before attempting.

System Issues

Issue Solution
RTC is unresponsive Try pressing and holding the encoder button. If the device remains unresponsive, power cycle the base station (which powers the RTC).
Settings not saving The RTC saves settings to internal storage automatically. If settings are lost after a power cycle, there may be a storage issue; try a Factory Reset and reconfigure (a reset clears your pairing, so you will need to re-pair with the base station afterwards).
Warning screen won't dismiss Press the encoder button or tap the screen to dismiss warning dialogs. If the warning keeps reappearing, the underlying condition (low voltage, high temperature) is still present.
Wrong temperature units displayed Change the units in Settings > Temp Units (°F or °C).
Voltage reading seems inaccurate Use the Voltage Drift calibration in Base Settings to offset the reading. Compare with a known-accurate voltmeter and adjust the drift value until the readings match.
Temperature reading appears stuck or incorrect with one probe disconnected On firmware 3.10.5 and newer, the temperature reading on the main screen follows the hottest active probe, so unplugging or losing one probe no longer leaves the display stuck on a missing probe. The graph legend also adds and removes probes in lockstep with the lines drawn on the graph: if a probe disappears from the legend, its trace is also hidden. If you see otherwise, update the RTC firmware.
RTC reboots on its own during the boot animation The RTC includes a safety watchdog that automatically restarts the device if the display stops responding during the first few seconds after power-on. This is rare in normal use, but if the RTC ever boots into a frozen splash screen, the watchdog will recover it without any action on your part. If reboots repeat continuously, contact LF Audio support.
RTC freezes after the boot window (display stops updating, touch unresponsive) The display-freeze watchdog only protects the first ~10 seconds after boot. After that, a hard freeze requires a manual power cycle of the base station. If freezes are reproducible at a specific action (e.g., always when opening a particular settings screen), note the steps and contact LF Audio support so we can fix it in firmware.
Smart Home (Matter) pairing fails from RTC's Smart Home menu Open the Smart Home screen on the RTC: the Issue row at the top shows the specific failure reason (Set WiFi in app, Network not found, Wrong password, Connection timed out, Unknown). Most failures come from base-station WiFi credentials that need to be set or corrected from the LF Audio AuralSync app before Matter commissioning can proceed. Requires base station firmware 3.9.0 or newer.
Pair Knob menu fails to detect the new knob The new knob must be in pairing mode (factory-reset state) for the RTC's Pair Knob wizard to see it. Also confirm the base station is on firmware 3.1.1 or newer (the wizard menu only appears when this is true). If pairing still fails after both sides are in pairing mode, power-cycle the new knob and retry.

Factory Reset

If the RTC is behaving unexpectedly and other troubleshooting steps have not resolved the issue:

  1. Long-press to open the menu
  2. Select Advanced
  3. Select Factory Reset
  4. Select Confirm Reset on the confirmation screen
  5. The RTC will erase all settings and stored pairing data, then restart
  6. Complete the pairing process as described in First Boot and Pairing
Warning

A factory reset erases all settings including brightness, display preferences, cached base station WiFi, and the stored pairing. Your manually saved WiFi networks are preserved. You will need to reconfigure the device after resetting.
