Song list

basic

See the songs from your phone's music app on your display or PRO knob. Tap a song to play it. You also see the song that is playing, and the artist. You see how far into the song you are, too.

What you need

  • An Android phone with the LF Audio app. Get it from Google Play, and keep it up to date. See Get the App.
  • A WVC base station: a WVC, WVC-LITE or WVC-PRO. It needs the latest firmware on both of its processors. One update usually installs both. See Firmware Updates.
  • A display or PRO knob: a WDD-LITE, WVC Dual PRO Knob or WVC Quad PRO Knob. It needs its latest firmware too.
  • Your phone connected to the base station over Bluetooth. See Bluetooth Pairing.
  • Playback set to On on your display or PRO knob. Press and hold the screen to open its menu, or tap the gear at the top. Choose Settings. Set Playback to On.
Note

Song list works with Android phones only. iPhone does not let apps see the songs in another app. On an iPhone, the playback buttons on your display still work.

Note

The RTC and the BassWatch do not show the Song list. They do not show the song time either.

Turn on Song list

  1. Open the LF Audio app. Connect to your base station.
  2. Tap Settings at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Under Bluetooth, find Song list. It says "Show your music app's songs on your display".
  4. Turn on Song list.
  5. A message explains what it does. Tap Continue.
  6. If the app has no access yet, your phone opens its notification access screen. If no screen opens, access is already on. Go to step 9.
  7. Turn on access for LF Audio. If your phone asks you to confirm, allow it.
  8. Go back to the LF Audio app.
  9. Start a playlist or album in your music app. If it shares its songs, the Song list button shows on your display. See Which music apps work.

Now open the Song list on your display. See Use the Song list on your display.

You set this up only once. After that, Song list starts by itself when your phone connects to that base station. See When the app is closed.

The Song list switch shows up after your phone connects to a base station with the latest firmware. After that, it stays.

If the app shows "Song list needs access to your music app. Turn on access for LF Audio.", tap Open Settings. Turn on access for LF Audio. Then go back to the app.

Note

Android calls this notification access. The app does not read your messages. It only looks at what your music app is playing, and only while Song list is on.

If the app asks you

After you use the playback buttons on your display, the app may ask: "See your songs on your display? Turn on Song list."

  • Turn on: the setup starts. Tap Continue. Then follow steps 6 to 9 above.
  • Not now: decide later. The app may ask again.
  • No thanks: the app stops asking. You can still turn it on in Settings.

Use the Song list on your display

Note

The song name, the Song list button and the playback buttons show only when Playback is On. Playback is in your display's Settings. With Playback set to Off, none of them show.

WDD-LITE

Tap the Song list button, the right-most button along the bottom. Then tap a song to play it. For all the steps, see Display and Navigation.

PRO knob

Tap the Song list button, the right-most button along the bottom. Then tap a song, or pick one with an encoder. For all the steps, see PRO Knob Guide.

What the list shows

  • The song playing now is at the top, with a play symbol.
  • The songs that come next are below it. You see up to 50 songs.
  • Songs you already played are not shown.
  • A spinner shows while the songs load.
  • A row reads "..." until its song loads.
  • Back is the last row.
  • If your songs change, the list loads again from the top.
  • If your phone disconnects, the display goes back to the main screen.

Names show in plain letters. Accents are removed. Emoji and other alphabets are left out. A song name written only in another alphabet shows blank. Then the main screen shows no song name for that song. Long names are cut short and end in "...".

Where you are in the song

With Song list on, your display also shows how far into the song you are. It shows the time too. Live radio and some music apps do not share this.

Tap the song name on your display to open Now Playing.

If your music app allows it, you can move through the song from your display:

  • On the main screen, hold previous or next to jump back or ahead 10 seconds. Keep holding to jump again.
  • On Now Playing, drag the slider, or tap back 10 or forward 10.
  • On a PRO knob, turn an encoder on Now Playing.

Not every music app allows it. If yours does not, a hold on previous or next works like a tap.

On a PRO knob, press an encoder on Now Playing to play or pause.

See Display and Navigation and PRO Knob Guide.

Which music apps work

Music app What you get
YouTube Music The song name and the Song list. Tap a song to play it.
Amazon Music The song name and the Song list. Tap a song to play it.
Apple Music The song name and the Song list. Tap a song to play it.
Tidal The song name and the Song list. Tap a song to play it.
Deezer The song name and the Song list. Tap a song to play it.
Spotify Premium The song name and the Song list. Tap a song to play it.
Spotify Free The song name only. No Song list.
Audible The book and chapter names, and a list of the chapters. Tap a chapter to play it.
Other apps The song name shows if the app shares it. The Song list shows only if the app shares its songs.

These apps were tested on an Android phone. A music app update can change what it shares.

The songs come from the music app that is playing. If nothing is playing, they come from the music app you used last. That app must still be open.

With a very long playlist, the Song list button may not show.

When the app is closed

You do not need to keep the LF Audio app open. Song list keeps working when you close the app.

  • Song list starts by itself when your phone's Bluetooth connects to your base station. You do not need to open the app.
  • It works with base stations the app connected to while Song list was on. Turning Song list off clears this.
  • If Song list does not start by itself, open the app near the base station. Let it connect. After that, Song list starts by itself.
  • After your phone restarts, unlock it once. Then Song list starts by itself again.
  • It keeps working with your phone locked.
  • While Song list runs, your phone can show a notification: "Song list on your display". It shows only if you allow notifications for the app. Tap it to open the app.
  • If your phone disconnects, the Song list leaves your display. It comes back when your phone connects again.
  • After the base station disconnects, the notification can stay for up to two minutes.
  • If your phone stops answering, the Song list closes within about half a minute.
  • Song list keeps your phone connected to the base station. It does this even with Keep Connected in Background off.

Open the app to set up Song list. Also open it after you stop it from your phone's Active apps list. See Turn it off. A pairing problem shows its message only when you open the app.

The playback buttons do not need the app. They keep working when the app is closed.

More than one phone

If two phones are connected, the display shows the songs from the phone that turned on Song list. A phone with Song list off does not hide them.

Turn on Song list in one phone only. With two, the list can switch between them.

More than one base station

If you link more than one base station, connect your phone to your primary base station. That is the one your display or PRO knob is paired with. The Song list and the playback buttons work only through that base station.

Turn it off

  1. Open the LF Audio app.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Under Bluetooth, turn off Song list.

The song name leaves your display. The notification goes away. Song list no longer starts by itself. The playback buttons keep working. With Song list off, the app does not look at your music app.

While the app is connected, the Song list button stays on your display. Tap it to see how to turn Song list on again. This needs Playback set to On on your display.

Turning off Song list does not remove Android's access for LF Audio. You can turn that off in your phone's notification access settings. That stops Song list too.

Swiping the app away from your recent apps does not stop Song list. Android 13 and later also have an Active apps list. Pull down from the top of the screen to find it. If you tap Stop next to LF Audio there, Song list stops. It usually stays off until you open the app again. To turn Song list off for good, turn it off in the app.
